Gary has a broad range of psychological interests and clinical experience developed from over 15 years of working in various professional contexts including the NHS, private practice, elite sport, and the corporate sector. Gary’s area of expertise is adult mental health, working with individuals and groups across the lifespan, presenting with a range of psychological and mental health issues, which include adjustment disorder, depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, performance anxiety, bereavement issues, relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, and eating disorders. Gary is passionate about working collaboratively with his clients to reach a mutual understanding of their difficulties so that he can tailor interventions to meet their specific and unique needs. Gary also has extensive expertise in providing one-to-one life and executive coaching and he is passionate about helping his clients move towards the realisation of their personal and professional goals. Gary uses a collaborative, client-centred approach in his coaching sessions. He creates an open, supportive, and trusting environment that encourages clients to deeply self-reflect, develop self-awareness, pinpoint negative thinking and behavioural patterns, and create positive behavioural changes. As a result, clients broaden their perspectives and are empowered to create actions toward their goals. Gary’s experience also includes working within high-pressure environments, such as aviation, professional / elite sport and the corporate arena, providing consultancy work, coaching and therapy for individuals and teams experiencing performance-related issues, such as performance slumps, performance anxiety and loss of confidence, with the goal of optimising performance, realising potential, and achieving excellence. She is a systematic practitioner, having trained at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She also has a Masters’ in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with additional specialist training in treating the effects of psychological trauma (using EMDR). She has been pivotal in developing Critical Incident policies for organisations, including schools. She has worked in and led a mental well-being team and managed the counselling service in a large London comprehensive school for over ten years. She is passionately committed to working collaboratively with her clients and adopts an holistic approach to therapy within NICE Guidelines and the Ethical Framework of Counselling (BACP). Shirah is trained in the treatment of trauma and carries out extensive assessment in treating trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and she works to help clients alleviate symptoms so as to live their lives as peacefully as possible. She adopts a client centred approach drawing from mindfulness training and uses imaginative and creative methods such as imagery, to combine traditional therapeutic approaches, such as CBT and Psychodynamic, with the creative part of an individual’s talents. She has spent many years working on the use of imagery, creativity and mindfulness to help with self-soothing and resilience. Shirah has managed a busy School Counselling Service in a large London comprehensive school and has extensive experience of working with adolescents. Shirah is a consultant therapist at the Istituto Maragoni, London, a leading global graduate school for young people studying creative arts, fashion and design. She has been engaged in organisational critical events involving complex issues and policy formulation. She has a special interest in Aviation Psychology, specialising in working with crew. Her years of doing shift work in a disciplined and critical environment have given her an insight into the pressures that crew face. She is also interested in the challenges emergency services and armed forces have to face in their work and the impact this may have on their mental wellbeing. Having spent many years working in high-risk, sometimes unpredictable and often highly charged working environments, her psychotherapeutic style is calm, contained, and respectful. She also works in a time-sensitive way, seeking to bring compassion, understanding and working solutions to human problems as rapidly as is possible. As well as face- to- face therapy, she offers online, Skype or FaceTime sessions. Her philosophy is that every experience can be an opportunity for personal growth and her response is to help build the strength to go on. Sara has a broad range of psychological interests and clinical experience developed from working in various professional contexts including the NHS, private practice and educational, charitable and corporate sectors. Her clinical experience includes working mainly with adolescents, adults and couples. She works with a range of psychological issues, some of which may require brief solution-focused therapy and other more complex existential issues, which require more in-depth exploration and longer term psychological support. Her experience includes working with depression, mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, bi-polar disorder, eating disorders, stress and addictions.
Sara aims to collaborate closely with her clients to tailor any therapeutic intervention to their individual needs. Her philosophy as a therapist is to nurture a supportive, flexible and encouraging environment with a strong therapeutic alliance at its core. Her clinical approach is informed by evidence-based therapies and she draws mainly from Cognitive and Behavioural framework (including Mindfulness, ACT, Compassion-focused and Schema approaches). Her work is essentially practical and solution–focused, aimed at identifying mechanisms underlying and driving the problem and developing strategies and skills for more effectively managing associated psychological difficulties.
Sara’s experience includes working within the corporate arena, providing consultancy work, coaching and therapy for individuals experiencing mainly stress-related issues in City of London based organisations. She has also worked extensively with adolescents and young people including students from the Royal Ballet School and as visiting psychologist at St Paul’s School for boys. She is also consultant psychologist at the Istituo Marangoni, a leading global graduate school for young people studying the creative arts, fashion and design. This backdrop of experience has enabled Sara to develop an in-depth understanding of the psychological pressures and contemporary mental health issues experienced by adolescents and young adults and she is passionate about providing therapeutic support to this client group.
Beyond her clinical work, Sara is the Programme Director of the Post-Graduate Certificate in Counselling Psychology and Lecturer and Year Lead on the Professional Doctorate Programme in Counselling Psychology at City, University of London. As an adjunct to her teaching posts, she provides supervision to doctoral students conducting qualitative research in a range of topics related to the field of Counselling Psychology.
Sara has also contributed to the evolving body of psychology literature and continues to write periodically between clinical and academic posts as and when time permits.
