Traumatic experiences can be overwhelming and cause significant psychological distress. Some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and experience symptoms like reliving the event or events in the daytime (flashbacks) or at night (nightmares). People may feel numb and disconnected at times, sad, irritable and constantly on edge, and jumpy. People may also experience less obvious but more ongoing traumas in early life which can affect their mental health and relationships in adulthood. Trauma can be treated with medication, psychological treatment, and holistic practices like yoga and meditation. Over time, people can process trauma, heal and move forward.
